The word ‘Vaastu Shastra’ is derived from the root ‘Vas’ which means ‘to reside’ and ‘Shastra’ in Sanskrit means systems. The first mention of Vaastu is found in Holy Book Yajurveda, a 5000 years old divine text of Hindus.

Elements of Vastu Shastra

According to Vedic literature, whole universe is made up of five basic elements, the Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Space also known as ‘Panch-Mahabhootas’. The human body is also made up of these elements. Any imbalance in our external and internal panch-mahabhootas, Vastu Shastra translates into unhappy situations. Vastu Shastra teaches us how to correct our internal and external imbalances of Panch-Mahabhootas, to ensure a peaceful and stress free life. These five elements are-

Earth (Prithvi):-
Earth (Prithvi) is the most important element in Vastu and influence human lives in every way. Earth is known for its gravitational and magnetic qualities. Its magnetic field and gravitational force has considerable effect on everything on the Earth, living and non-living. According to Vastu Shastra, if the earth element is in a balancing state, it induces stability in life.

Water (Jal):-
Water (Jal) is the second most important element in Vastu and represents North East direction hence elements of water like water tank, incoming water line have to be placed in North East direction. Quantitatively, it is the largest of the five elements, as more than 80% of our body and two-third of earth's surface is water. In Vastu Shastra, Water is associated with creation of new concepts and when water is balanced it brings broader outlook of life and prosperity.

Fire (Agni):-
In Vastu Shastra, Fire (Agni) represents light and heat without which life is impossible. Light is the essence of life, and sun is the natural light giver so in Vastu Shastra, there should be proper arrangement in house for incoming sun light. Sun light is the source of all positive energy. Fire or Agni represents South East direction in Vastu Shastra hence elements of fire like kitchen or electrical gadgets have to be placed in South East direction.

Air (Vaayu):-
Air (Vaayu) is the fundamental element for our survival. Air represents growth, mental stability and happiness in life. Air is an element of north-east. Vastu Shastra describes the methods for placement of doors, windows, ventilators, balconies, height of structure and placement of trees and plants, to balance the air element and to facilitate good flow of air within the structure.

Space (Aakaasha):-
Space (Aakaasha) provides shelter to the other four elements. According to Vastu Shastra, in a house, the space element is related to the central portion or the ‘Brahma sthan’ means where ‘Brahma-creature of the world’ resides and it is related to growth and progress. So any disturbances in the space element prove to be detrimental to growth and progress. It is important that ‘Brahmasthan’ be kept open.
